James is a young and enthusiastic musician who teaches both violin and viola. His love of musical pedagogy can be observed in his emphatic and often lively approach when teaching violin; many of his students are award winners from top competitions such as the Australian International Music Competition, Sydney Eisteddfod and Wollongong Eisteddfod; they hold concertmaster and other leadership positions in the Sydney Youth Orchestra programme and regularly give public performances.
James started violin at the age of 5 under teacher Michelle Dye at Melbourne’s Kansai International School, well known for its establishment of the Suzuki Method. As a child he engaged heavily in his music community, playing with Melbourne Youth Orchestras and was selected for The Advanced String Academy by MCO. James graduated from the Victorian College of the Arts in 2013 under Australian pedagog and early music specialists Rachel Beasley(violin/viola).
Moving to Sydney he continued his studies under professor Zhu Wen(violin/viola), graduating in 2016 from the Australian Institute of Music. Since 2015 he has been working professionally with many orchestras and opera companies home and abroad. These include: China National Centre for the Performing Arts Orchestra, Australian International Opera Company, Royal Melbourne Philharmonic Orchestra, Melbourne Opera, Suzhou Symphony Orchestra, Beijing Symphony Orchestra and the Boston Philharmonic Orchestra.
He has performed through 50+ international cities across China, Japan, Taiwan, Singapore, Thailand, New Zealand, Canada and the United States. In 2018 he obtained his fellowship under Prof. Lynn Chang (violin).
James is most impassioned when working with young violinist and insists on the importance of a healthy technical structure and musical development during the foundation years. Student ages begin from as young as 4+ with students varying in levels from beginners through to advanced players. Every year he sends many students to do exams through AMEB, TCL & ABRSM all of who receive top marks and honours.
